MDDN 241 - project 1 developments

This is a further developed idea of concept 1. This drawing shows the hard jagged crystal like forms exploding out of the ground, and as the move slowly forming into a softer more fluid form to melt back into the ground changing both how it moves and looks. This can then be repeated to create an interesting animation of the form.

This is a further development of concept 2 where it starts of as a small hexagon type shape and many more are added on to change the way it will look and move, also creating a more detailed pattern on the surface, ultimately changing the surface material. Where it was once a small smooth single shape, it slowly becomes a large slow moving rugged detailed object.

MDDN 241 - project 1 Concepts

With this concept I am looking at more spiky jagged looking objects and transforming them into something more fluid and organic that looks like it moves easier. I was investigating how a certain form can change they way it looks and moves yet keeping some structural qualities.

With thus concept I looked at how a simple shape can be transformed and take over by a different material, which can change the way it looks feels and moves. Again how the form can keep some qualities but can still be completely different caused by the material change.

With this concept I looked at how an object can change shape and form my growing and adding to it slowly over time. How starting with something simple can be completely change just by the form extending and growing and through this changing its appearance not just structurally but also the exterior material, as well as how it moves.

MDDN 241 - project 1 precidents

Damien Herst
A common theme in Damien Herst’s work is death, which can be clearly seen in a lot of his work done with animals split in two, or preserved. I particularly like his work with skulls as he uses different materials to create a different view on what the skull is. For example his piece “For the love of God”, where he covers a human skull with diamonds. This also strongly relates to the project where materiality is used to change the object.

Alex Grey
Alex Grey is a very psychedelic and spiritual artist. He does a lot of work that relates to the naked human body behind the skin, only muscle. I like a lot of his work where it slowly morphs throughout the painting, always leading the eye somewhere else.  Just like Damien, Alex Grey does some work with skulls changing the way you see them buy changing the appearance and materiality. He uses many skulls that are very rounded and brightly coloured, giving a different view on the skull.

Jason Deamer
In a lot of Jason Deamer’s work for Pixar you can see that he creates strong characters by exaggerating features. I especially like his character designs in the Cars movies. He uses this exaggeration to create almost organic and fluid with strong personalities portrayed through this shape. He makes something that is ordinarily mechanic and lifeless become alive and organic.

Patricia Piccini
Patricia Piccini does many organic sculptures, ranging from bizarre hybrid animals to mechanical objects turned organic. Her sculptures where she has created organic objects made of scooter parts are especially interesting. The way she can manipulate the shape and form of something to make it appear as something completely different.
